Noah’s New Lease on Life

Dear Primates Inc. Supporters,

I wanted to share with you some news about Noah, the 9-year-old rhesus monkey sanctuary resident who came to us from the pet trade with his life-long mate, Maddie.

In April, Noah underwent surgery for an intestinal prolapse and became very sick—to the point where he was barely eating. We scheduled an emergency physical with our amazing veterinary team who discovered he had an infection. They sedated Noah and administered intravenous fluids and antibiotics. This procedure required that Noah remain under sedation much longer than what is normal for a healthy monkey, and it took him four hours to fully wake up. When he did, he was very lethargic.

Knowing Noah wasn’t out of the woods, I stayed at the sanctuary that evening, checking on him every two hours. We needed to separate him from Maddie to ensure he could rest peacefully, but it was difficult to see her looking so concerned as he lay there unresponsive to her coos. I gave her treats to try to distract her and keep her calm. Finally, at midnight, Noah started to perk up. I offered him produce—he ate two plates full! Exhausted and relieved, I said, “Nope, you aren’t leaving us today, Noah!” To celebrate, I gave all the monkeys in the room a special treat of greens and nuts.

In the following weeks, Noah continued to regain his appetite and his strength. Another blood draw three weeks later showed that his infection had cleared! The staff and volunteers were so excited. Attached are pictures of Noah today; you would never guess he was so sick!

Because of your support, we are able to provide top-notch medical care—including the kind of emergency care that Noah received—to all our monkey residents. Thank you for enabling us to persevere in our mission, demonstrating to all what is possible for monkeys from the pet trade and laboratories.

Sincerely,

Amy Kerwin, Founder
