We are extremely saddened to report that PI sanctuary resident Ganesha was suffering from heart failure. His health had significantly deteriorated over the last several weeks, and we had to make the incredibly tough decision to say goodbye to such a sweet soul. The staff, multiple veterinarians, and volunteers went above and beyond to provide extra care and attention to Ganesha as he went through a number of exams and treatments before we realized we had done everything we could and that his condition was not improving or sustainable. We deeply grieve this great loss.
We are so honored Ganesha achieved sanctuary from a laboratory and found his best buddy, Junior, here. They were troop mates for nearly 2 years, and in that time, their social behavior had really started to bloom. Ganesha’s relaxed nature complimented Junior’s restlessness and their companionship brought both of them comfort and enjoyment. Staff was always thrilled to see Junior grooming Ganesha and the bond these two monkeys had formed, not wanting to be separate during cleaning, etc. Ganesha was comforted with “nurse” Junior by his side grooming him and being a friend, even when Ganesha’s illness had become profound. Ganesha loved resting on the highest outdoor enclosure benches, breathing in the fresh air, and observing his surroundings. He enjoyed his daily produce and loved mango and frozen treats. Many affectionately called this unique and adorable rhesus monkey, “Neshie.”
As we mourn the loss of Ganesha, we were also concerned about Junior and his well-being. As you can imagine, Junior was also heart-broken, and he reminded us just how much monkeys grieve losses like humans do. To act quickly, staff tested socialization between Junior and Rocky to see if the previous group mates were still compatible. It was very clear that Junior craved companionship once again as soon as possible and Rocky was eager for the reunion as well. We are pleased to report that Junior and Rocky are now reunited and have already been grooming, playing, and enjoying the warmer weather together.
Saying goodbye is the saddest part of being involved with a sanctuary. We plan to place a tribute on the nature trail in honor of Ganesha this spring.
Please see the pictures below of Ganesha enjoying sanctuary life.
Thank you for all of the support you have provided Ganesha over the years. He will be dearly missed.
