The Primates Inc. Sanctuary Residents

Izzle / Rhesus Macaque

Primate Type: Old World Monkey
Favorite Fruit: Mangos
Favorite Activity: Mirrors

Izzle is a male rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) born on May 25th, 2004. He was sent to the Primates Inc. sanctuary in 2018 from an out-of-state laboratory. His favorite food is mangos but when he is not eating he loves to interact with the various toys placed in his enclosure. His favorite enrichment items are his mirrors which he uses to look at himself and his surroundings, and his Kongs (snowman shaped chew toy) which he enjoys destroying by chewing them into tiny pieces.

Izzle is a dominant monkey who currently lives alone but is enriched by the monkeys around him and the staff who can safely groom him with a back scratcher when he “presents” for attention. We hope one day Izzle can find a mate – his social partner will either need to be a submissive female or male macaque who shows affiliation towards him. Our behavior program assesses behavior of monkeys in advance to pairing to ensure a successful formation since socializing rhesus monkeys is very challenging because they can become aggressive with each other so quickly. Ideally a dominant and submissive monkey would make a good pair since they don’t have to fight over who is dominant. Izzle is thriving at the sanctuary despite being by himself and shows natural behaviors such as foraging, traveling between enclosures, self grooming, resting and eating! We can’t wait until Izzle finds a future mate though!
